Monthly #capturewith challenge 10-20th SEPTEMBER - MONOCHROMATIC PHOTOGRAPHY

Updated: Nov 28, 2022

What Is monochromatic Photography?

Any photo having only the hues of one colour is monochromatic, and there are two ways to achieve that.

You can take a photo of a scene containing only one colour, or you can change colours in post-processing.

Why are we creating monochromatic photographs?

Because it’s a great way to simplify your photos, moreover this allows your viewer to focus more on the composition you choose and textures. Besides that, colours inspire emotion. Monochromatic scenes have always stronger vibes and messages.

For example, red, it's the colour of passionate love, seduction, violence, danger, anger, and adventure.

Green is a dominant colour in nature which represents natural and forestial environments. Out of all the colours on the colour wheel, green is regarded as the most restful and relaxing colour for the human eye. Green symbolizes harmony, tranquillity, and peace.

Yellow was one of the first colours used in art due to the wide availability of yellow ochre pigment. Yellow is associated with intellect, and logic; it has the ability to improve analytical thinking. It is also linked with cheerfulness, happiness, and optimism. It inspires hope, and enthusiasm.

The colour blue represents both the sky and the sea and is associated with open spaces, freedom, intuition, imagination, inspiration, and sensitivity.

Monochromatic photography isn't difficult because you only have to deal with one colour.

Combining colours in food photography, on the other hand, is a lot harder. You need to learn how they combine well and why some combine better than others.

If you want to start with monochromatic photography, start with close-ups of repeat objects, eg. fruits, or capture a cake on a plate and background in the same colour. Capturing drinks should also be easy to achieve.

You’ll be amazed by how many monochromatic scenes you’ll discover if you really look and pay attention.
